After a 12-hour operation, the Indian Navy rescued 23 Pakistani nationals from Somali bandits.

Somali pirates have attacked several ships and boats in the past few months. Maritime trade continues to be affected by attacks by Houthi rebels and Somali pirates.

After a 12-hour operation, the Indian Navy rescued the Iranian flagged fishing boat 'Al-Kamber 786' from Somali pirates. The Navy said 23 Pakistani crew also survived during the raid in the Arabian Sea on Friday.

Nine armed sailors boarded a boat on Thursday afternoon in the Arabian Sea, 90 nautical miles south-west of Socotra, a Navy official said. On receiving the news of kidnapping on Friday morning, Naval patrol ship 'INS Sumedha' reached the spot, followed by warship 'INS Trishul'.

Somali pirates have attacked several ships in the Arabian Sea in the past few months. Maritime trade continues to suffer from attacks by Houthi rebels and Somali pirates. On 17 March, the Indian Navy rescued a small cargo ship from Somali pirates. 

The operation lasted about 40 hours. 35 pirates arrested for hijacking ship 17 crew members of the ship survived. Yemen's Houthi rebel group earlier attacked an Indian Navy warship while trying to rescue a ship hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

A Liberian merchant ship with 28 sailors was rescued. An Iranian-flagged fishing boat fell into the hands of Somali pirates last January. The Indian Navy also rescued 19 Pakistani nationals in a boat rescue operation.
